There is a Frary Family Association in Massachusetts that has a published Frary Family in America Genealogy with addendum.  The master list was published in 1981.  The Frary Family Association has a gathering in even years in August at Old Deerfield, Mass, at the Frary House (one of the restored houses in this lovely old town).  The genealogy is quite extensive.  It goes back to when John and Priscilla arrived in Massachusetts in 1637.    You might search for the Frary Family Association on line.  Chris Frary

Hi Chris

Thank you for the information which I believe might well be news to many members of this small forum here in the UK.  I visited Deerfield with my wife a few years ago and enjoyed it immensely.  Of couse we went around the Frary House and heard all about it's history and Samson Frary who settled on the site and gave his name to the current bulding.  The guide also told us about the Frary Family Association and the book but we were unable to see a copy at the time.

There is some information about Samson on selectregistry.com as follows:

"Samson Frary was a "professional" pioneer and, as such, became the first settler in Deerfield. George Sheldon's History of Deerfield lists Samson as being in Deerfield as early as 1669. He lived in a small shelter of some sort at the north end of what is now The Street, and most certainly sustained himself by tilling and planting a small piece of land. Sheldon records that Samson Frary built a house on lot 29 across from the town common some time around 1683. This is approximately the site of the present Frary House/Barnard Tavern and future archaeology might help us to reconstruct the life and surroundings of this early Deerfield resident. Samson met his death on that terrible night in February 1704 during the French and Indian attack on Deerfield."

I have tried to gain information of the Frary Family of America online but without luck.  However I think it is unlikely to help in tracing my ancestor Richard Frary as I know he lived in Norfolk England and his ancestors are unlikely to have lived in America and returned here.   (Of course it is still a possibility.)  I still have not found a link to either of Richard's parents although it appears that his surname was mistranscribed as "Tray" in the 1851 census.  Record errors make it a problem to track back of course although it seems more common in older records that names are misspelled but sound the same.  Since many folks were illiterate they had no idea if the census officers had written their name down correctly!  I think a visit to Norfolk may need to be arranged in order to try and find some information locally but as usual time is always difficult to find but easy to lose (unlike weight which is easily found but difficult to lose).

Regards
Derek Frary - Bristol England

Derek:  The Frary Family in America genealogy was published in 1981 and no sooner did they do that than someone in the family found information on forebears in Britain.  I am a little out of the loop, but will get in touch with one of the officers of the FFA and see if they can provide information to you via this forum.  May take me a week or so.  Chris Frary
