Kavita Frary has asked for this section which I think is a great idea. So here is my input.

 

I was once at a fair and found a stall that printed nice scroll style documents that had the origin and coat of arms for 'thousands' of surnames. However when I entered Frary in it simply chickened out and said it was a derivative of Friar. Working in computers I'm pretty sure this was simply a way to ensure a sale rather than being honest and saying 'Nothing Found', or it could be that Frary genuinely derives from Friar.

 

A quick search on the internet I found a couple of sites (linked later) with limited success as most simply say ‘Nothing Found’.

 

In brief it looks as though it derives from one of three possible origins.

 

1.    The Latin word frater : brother used in the meaning of a holy man / monk

2.    A nickname or name given due to associating or working for those in religious circles, for example a monastery.

3.    Variant of the Germanic personal name Friederich.

 

Interestingly http://www.nameseekers.co.uk seems to think that they have an origin and maybe even a coat of arms for Frary, Frary is listed as a surname they have on file.
